ATV Maintenance and Service

ATV Maintenance and Service

How do you properly care for your valuable ATV or Quad.  Hopefully you will find some good information here to help you keep you investment running smoothly and reliably.  Maintaining your ATV or quad is important not just because you don't want to break down in the middle of nowhere but for safety as well.   It can be very dangerous to have a wheel come off or a motor seize at high speeds or when traversing a steep hillside.

Keep a maintenace schedule and a service log for your all terrain vehicle.  Service the engine oil and filters often.  Clean oil and a clean air filter and the most important factors for keeping your engine running for a long time.   If it's a four stroke, valves will have to be adjusted at regular intervals (see your manual).   At some point, the valves may need to be replaced and the valve seats service (lapped or replaced).  Two strokes, while not having a valve train to service, may need a top end (piston and rings) replacement sooner than a four stroke.  This is because the two stroke ATV motor often runs higher RPMs.

Keep a good eye on your tire pressure and the condition of your rims (wheels).  Tire pressure is not only important for tire wear but also affects traction, ride comfort and safety.   Likewise, good tread on your tires is equally important, especially if you are racing your ATV or quad.   Replace the tires when they are worn, don't skimp here as injurys are generally more expensive and keep you from riding!

Consider that keeping you ATV or quad in good, safe working order is really just cheap insurance.  Get to know your manual (yes actually read it) and your machine and you will ride longer and safer.
