Jeep / 4 Wheel Drive

Jeep is synonymous with four-wheel drive as Kleenex is with tissue paper.  However, not all four wheel drive vehicles are Jeeps.  Four-wheel drives are also referred to by 4 wheel drive, 4WD, 4X4, off-road vehicle and all-wheel drive.  The difference in an all wheel drive vehicle is that they have a center differential that cannot be locked and you cannot disengage it from four wheel drive.   The AWD vehicle can be used on dry pavement whereas the true four-wheel drive will have binding occur in the driveline causing wheel hop and other issues including permant damage if driven for long on dry pavement.  

Most sport utility vehicles are mainly used for transportation and have an ability to engage the 4 wheel drive when needed such as in snow, wet pavement or off-road use.  All wheel drive machines may even include luxury cars, sport cars and therefore vehicles that are not considered off-road vehicles.

Then there are the true off-road vehicles, the four-wheel drives lovingly referred to as "rock crawlers".  These highly modified trucks are made to tackle the toughest off-road obsticles and enthusiasts look for "jeep roads" that will offer them a real challenge.  Rock crawling enthusiasts can spend great amounts of money and time building their ulitmate rock crawler, but ask any of them, and they will tell you it's worth it.  

Places like MOAB Utah offer excellent off-road truck challenges.  There are scenic roads that the stock SUV owner can enjoy and there are trails like the Golden Spike that offer greater challenges and great views.  Whatever your affliction, off-road travel is adventours and fun.
