Winter Sports - Cross Country / Telemark Skiing

Alpine skiing differs from telemark skiing by the use of stiffer, less flexible plastic boots.  The alpine ski boot also has the heels attached to the skis with releaseable bindings.

Alpine Freestyle skiiers are often reffered to as hotdoggers or that they are hotdogging.  Freestyle skiing is often very acrobatic.   With jumps, flips, 180 and 360 rotations and many variables of the same, this is exciting to watch and can be dangerouse to learn.    Freestyle is also referred to as Jib Skiing.

Back Country Skiing, sometimes called Nordic Touring, is very popular and an exciting form of excerise.  It can be very strenous as it involves traveling up and down slopes often travelling many miles.

Cross-Country Skiing, also known as Nordic Skiing, can be done almost anywhere where there is snow.   A ski lift is not required and is therefore very popular due to lower cost.

Kite skiing is growing in popularity recently as again a ski lift is not required.  The lift is provided by a kite, a parachute or parasail (known as para-skiing).

Ski Racing,
comes in many competitive flavors such as; cross-country racing, slalom racing, downhill racing, ski jumping and freestyle racing.

Telemark Skiing uses leather or plastic ski boots, which are somewhat flexable with only the toes fastened to the ski.
