Winter Sports - Snowmobiling
Winter Sports - Snowmobiling
Snowmobiles or snowmachines are propelled by Kevlar composite tracks and steer on skis up front. Snowmobile riding on snow or ice and requires no trail however, many areas have designated snowmobile trails and many frozen lakes and streambeds offer great riding. Snowmobiles are even ridden is warm weather across bodies of water (at high speed), grass or even asphalt. Snowmobilers often drag race, hill climb, and race on tracks that include jumps.
When snowmobile riding please ride responsibly in areas that are open to snowmobile riding. Some areas require permits or may have riding only on designated roads and trails. You can often obtain maps and permits or regulations form public agencies. Try to avoid snowmobile riding in areas that may be prone to avalanches, have inadequate snow cover or across frozen water where the thickness or strength is not known. Be careful of steep grades, cornices, mounds that could be just hidden boulders and ruts or gullies. Never ride a snowmobile alone. Remember, snowmobile riding is great fun but please ride safe and avoid sensitive plant life and scaring wildlife or livestock. Please don’t litter or as the saying goes: “pack it in – pack it out”.
